The Girl Graduate - Her Own Book
Lillie
Sadler was a student, along with her younger brothers and sisters, in
Devol. When she was in High School, she graduated with top honors. Her
sister Mary Jane was in the eighth grade at that time and was to go on a class
hayride. Their mother wouldn't let her go without a chaperone and that
meant Lillie had to go along for that reason. The eighth grade teacher was
Floyd Newberry and he was the driver of the hay wagon full of kids. They
started visiting during the break time, and on the return trip he asked her to
sit up on the driver's seat with him. They started visiting a lot after
that, but couldn't date because a teacher was not to date students.
They married on December 17, 1925. Lillie had graduated early because of
her high grades, and also became a teacher. They both continued in
education, both earning Master's Degrees, and both were teachers and
principals, and Floyd also became Supt. in different OK communities.
They especially enjoyed taking high school students on trips across the United
States in different years to give them travel experience. They both were
leaders in 4-H, Boy Scouts, and Baptist Church Sunday School.
Lillie enjoyed scrapbooking at that time of their lives, long before they had
3 children of their own. Their students were their first
"kids".
